Well, nothing you could call a motive. Apparently, he's just some nutty firebug. Off the record, he spent a could of years at a mental hospital in the late '80s.

It's always important to ask about a motive. If you get an answer you can use it's often very important to your story. In this case, what will you do? Can you call him a "nutty firebug?" You should not use off-the-record info in your story.
